Fr. Thomas Hopko to speak at 2011 Symposium Oct. 15

Fr. Thomas Hopko, dean emeritus of St. Vladimir's Orthodox Seminary,
will speak at the 2011 Synergy Symposium, on Orthodox Christianity and Homosexuality. His book on the same topic, Christian Faith and Same-Sex Attraction: Eastern Orthodox Reflections, was published by Conciliar Press in 2006.

Fr. Thomas will be our sole speaker this year. He will address different aspects of the theme in two sessions.

First session: Theological Vision: Orthodox Christian Faith and Human Sexuality

Second Session: Spiritual Practice: Orthodox Christian Faith and Homosexual Attraction and Behavior

Our young people need to hear Fr. Thomas' message on the Church's stance on this timely issue, particularly with the pressures they are under from their schools and society to accept that "it's just okay." Please bring your Sunday school classes, youth groups, etc. This presentation will be appropriate for those middle school and older.

16th Annual Synergy Symposium

Synergy's 16th annual Symposium, held on October 16, was a resounding success! Our theme this year was "The ABCs of Marriage: Assumptions, Blessings, and Challenges." His Grace Bishop Michael (Dahulich) of the OCA Diocese of New York and New Jersey spoke on the ideal of marriage in his talk titled, "Then God Blessed Them..." Khouria Maggie Hock, Director of the Department of Marriage and Parish Family Ministries of the Antiochian Archdiocese addressed the practical issues of marriage in "Amending the Dream." Nearly 80 people from area Orthodox parishes were in attendance. The Symposium was hosted by Fr. Nicholas Dahdal and the parishioners of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in Cicero, IL. Following the Symposium, a Paraklesis service was prayed in front of the parish's weeping icon, Our Lady of Cicero.

Both His Grace and Khouria Maggie told us how much they enjoyed participating in the Symposium.

Both talks were recorded by Ancient Faith Radio. You may listen directly from AFR's website or download the talks to your own computer. Click here for both talks.

Save the date for next year's Symposium on Saturday, October 15!
